Say No! to CRD Park Tax in Sooke! Date: Monday, May 10, 2010 Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm Location: Sooke council, 2225 Otter Point Road Description Evidently the CRD still thinks it runs things in Sooke. That park is illegal, and it's going to cost the Sooke taxpayers a lot of money & jobs because it represents roughly 20% of the taxable residential land area. We need to reach out to every taxpayer in Sooke and ask them if they know what our Mayor intends to do about the CRD making us buy Oak Bay a park, increasing our taxes, and taking away our recreational amenties. We need a show of force at the next council meeting from everyone who objects to a tax increase in Sooke. The park is an illegal reduction of municipal area which requires the assent of the voters, pursuant to s.26 of the Local Government Act. If the voters agree, the park is still an expropriation under the injurious affection rule, (Community Charter s. 33, Local Government Act, s. 312) and the CRD has to compensate the District at least the amount of the lost tax revenue due to down-zoning. That will result in a lump sum of several hundred thousand $, and a tax reduction from the CRD in perpetuity. Please email everyone you know that pays tax in Sooke and ask them to: a) join our Facebook page on our web site at simrac.cab) come out to the next Sooke council meeting and tell the Mayor who she works for. It is not the residents of Oak Bay. This is our last shot! Make it count!
