Finally after months of periodic troubleshooting and hair pulling, I got the Pinz running properly yesterday. Virtually dismantled and cleaned both carbs, checked all fuel lines, reset carbs, reset float levels, reset points (many times), reset timing (many times), rebuilt the fuel pump that was perfectly OK, checked all wiring – all seemed OK. Checked vacuum and compression – all OK. Chris came by said it must be an ignition. So I bit the bullet and ordered the electronic ignition conversion kit from a Pinz dealer in San Francisco, which included an electronic igniter (replaces those nasty points), adapts a more common Bosch distributor cap and Petronic coil, new plug wires and uses standard NGK plugs (the stock plugs are $20 a pop. expeditionimports.zoovy.com/product/PZIGCONVShe runs fine now. Now I need to install the 20,000-btu/hr gas/diesel heater, which I picked up on e-Bay last spring to reduce hypothermia, which results from driving this beast in the winter.

Glenn the starter might be just gummed up from not being used or a little tired from being cranked on and not starting. Might not be to bad to just rebuild it.

Ian
What happens is periodically the starter just goes 'thunk' and nothing happens, which sounds like it jams in the ring-gear.
