4X4 WAS ENGAGED WHILE TIRE WAS SPINNING. LOUD CLUNK AND THEN INTERMITTENT DIFFICULTY ENGAGING 4X4. PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. NOW ONLY ABLE TO ENGAGE OCCASIONALLY BY SLOWLY DOING FIGURE EIGHT TURNS. DOES NOT STAY ENGAGED. ACTUATOR APPEARS OK. VACUUM SWITCHES WHEN GOING FROM 2 TO 4 WHEEL. INDICATOR LIGHTS OK AND SHIFTS FROM HI TO LOW. ANY IDEAS

Remove the vacuum disconnect on the axle - its only 4 bolts. There is a shift fork that engages the slip collar - this is what the vacuum moves. Check and make sure nothing looks broken. Its a pretty simple system vacuum sucks the shift fork and it slides the collar over both ends of the two piece axle. You should also be able to see the fork move in the actuator with the engine running and going from 2-4 wheel drive. Be careful and have someone watch it while you shift with the engine running.
If it is broken I have a complete cable shifter Posi-lok new in the box for 150.00 if you need it. Al V

Well I removed the vacuum disconnect. Everything appears ok but there is quite a bit of play in the fork where it slides on the shaft. Don't know is this is normal.. It appears that the collar is not being pushed far enough to engage the two piece axle. Actually sometimes it does and most of the time it doesn't. Still investigating.

Al, I'm intersted in the Posi-lok. How about e-mailing me at HuckandDi@shaw.ca and we'll make arrangements
